The most preferred and first-class treatment medication for seizures, panic disorders, anxiety, and akathisia is Klonopin also known by the name Clonazepam. It has a place with a class of medications known as benzodiazepines that are known for their calming and relaxing impacts.

It is an oral medication and has quick activity. The peak effects are reached within two hours after consumption. Like all other drugs, Klonopin has a list of side effects that occur if not used as per the instruction of your doctor. It is a short-term prescription medication and should be used only for the period prescribed by your doctor(maximum 4 weeks).

The components of the medication work by binding themselves to the GABA receptors and enhancing their activity. This calms down the patient’s brain from overworking which reduces the frequency of panic attacks.

The FDA approved the medication as a short-term treatment for the management of epilepsy, anxiety, and panic disorders with or without agoraphobia.

 Treating Seizures Using Klonopin:

The drug has proved to be an effective medication for children suffering from seizure disorders. The components of the drug worked effectively to produce significant results even at low plasma concentration levels and hence was prescribed for infantile spasms and rare childhood epilepsies. Added to this, it also treated conditions such as nonconvulsive status epilepticus, though the condition was transient in many, additional drug phenytoin was prescribed for long-term control of the condition. Klonopin has proved effective in treating infantile myoclonic and akinetic seizures. For conditions as serious as resistant epilepsy, an alternative benzodiazepine medication called clorazepate can be prescribed due to the slow onset of tolerance.

 Treating Anxiety Disorders Using Klonopin:

When Klonopin was administered to patients suffering from anxiety disorders such as social phobia and panic disorders in controlled clinical trials, the results were satisfactory and therefore was approved for using this drug for such conditions to be used as off-label indications. The effectiveness of the medication was so high that it has been prescribed for the effective management of acute mania.

 Treating Muscle Disorders Using Klonopin:

Though the medication is approved for the treatment of restless leg syndrome, using them for similar purposes has not been approved officially. However, there have been significant improvements when Klonopin was administered to those having bruxism, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, acute and chronic akathisia induced by neuroleptics, spasticity, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Klonopin is contraindicated in those who are under the influence of alcohol or other addictive illicit substances and in those who have respiratory depression.

Adverse Effects Of Klonopin…

Being a benzodiazepine, the drug has a high chance of being abused or misused due to its addictive properties. Adverse effects occur if the user is new to the drug and in those who are taking high doses for a long time. The common side effects are uncoordinated motor movements, heavy sedation, agitation, irritability, confusion, and dizziness. Prolonged usage of the medication can take a toll on your health and can cause short-term memory loss, hallucinations, seizures, changes in behavior and personality, dysphoria, extreme mood swings, and impulsivity

Klonopin Tolerance And Withdrawal:

Taking the benzodiazepine Klonopin for longer than four weeks can cause one to develop tolerance. In such conditions, the body will long for higher portions of the medication to feel the underlying impacts of the medication which makes the user take higher dosages than the endorsed sum. This propensity makes reliance on the medication and afterward becomes a driven habit. If you feel that your seizure conditions have improved, tell your doctor so. A gradual reduction of doses will be recommended to avoid any negative experiences.

Take Klonopin only as recommended by your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the dosage to suit your needs. Taking them for prolonged periods can cause addiction. To avoid such unpleasant conditions, consult your doctor during every stage of your treatment and go in for regular check-ups and monitoring.
